Warmer Homes Scheme: free home energy upgrades

The Warmer Homes Scheme upgrades your home for free if you qualify. It’s fully funded by SEAI and means-tested. Recent upgrades have averaged around €29,000 in value, at no cost to the homeowner.

Do I qualify for Warmer Homes?

You may qualify if you own and live in your home, it was built and occupied before 2006, and you (or someone in the household) receive one of these payments:

  • Fuel Allowance
  • Working Family Payment
  • One-Parent Family Payment
  • Domiciliary Care Allowance
  • Carer’s Allowance (living with the person you care for)
  • Disability Allowance for at least 6 months, with a child under 7
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance for at least 6 months, with a child under 7

Honest point: the Household Benefits Package does not qualify you on its own. It’s a common mix-up. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to help you check.

How long does it take?

Warmer Homes is popular and has a waiting list. As a rough guide it can take in the region of 14 months to survey and 24–26 months to completion. So the sooner you apply, the sooner your place in the queue starts.

Smart move: apply now, and insulate now too

Here’s a tip many people miss. You can apply for Warmer Homes now to start the clock, and in the meantime claim enhanced insulation grants through the individual scheme: currently up to €2,500 for attic insulation and up to €2,300 for cavity wall insulation (enhanced rates for qualifying welfare payments), without losing your place in the Warmer Homes queue.
